Print Production Treatment
Requirements
I am creating a women’s
lifestyle magazine that is aimed at 16-24 year old females. The size of the
magazine is going to be A4 and will consist of 12 pages. This includes 3 double
page spreads, 5 pages of advertising and a front cover. My first double page
spread is called ‘5 steps of happiness’ and this will be a double page spread
about how the target audience can follow these realistic steps and change their
lifestyle. This will be a window to the future self. For this double page
spread I will need to research what diet plans and exercises the target
audience can follow which will allow a positive change once the steps have
being completed, it will need to be something that if the target audience stick
to that they will see the change and this would overall give my magazine a good
reputation. The second double page spread is ‘Winter Blues’ which is an article
based on seasonal affective disorder, it will talk about experiences and
treatments available. Treatments are something I would have to do serious
research on, in order to give detailed information to the target audience on
which are accurate and correct. The last double page spread is ‘home time
horror’ which is a double page spread based on a girlfriends experiences when
her boyfriend is in an accident on the way home and the long 3 weeks spent in
hospital with repeated operations.
My magazine is aimed at
females ages 16-24, with a socio-economic status of ABC1C2. They are all
stereotypically interested in the same things such as clothing, restaurants,
social activities and women’s lifestyle genre of magazine. The magazine will
include advertisement that the genre would be interested in such as clothing,
make up etc, and the double page spreads will include the language the target
audience are interested in so they can feel involved in the article. This may
pose problems as some of the target audience may not be as interested as
others, therefore I will have to include different twists on the page in order
to entice all the target audience.
The language I will use for
the magazine will be first and second person as I think this suites the target
audience better and will make them feel part of the magazine. The intro style
will be a medium pace so that the target audience are already interested and
get to the point of what the article is about. The tone of the first article will be happy and
uplifting, this is because the target audience will be following steps to get to
a more positive place. The tone of the second article will be a serious but
positive, as the target audience reading the article may realise that they have
the disorder however there are many treatments they can use. The final article
will have a quite emotive tone as the audience will be driven into the feelings
of another person and may be somehow able to relate to the story or the
feelings and feel emotion towards the article. The paragraph length will be
70-100 words per paragraph as long and heavy depth articles would bore the
target audience and put them off reading through any more, this may also lose
some of the target audience as they would find the magazine hard to read. The
fonts will connote what kind of article it is, for example if it was a horror
story the target audience would be able to tell what kind of article is it by
just looking at it. The image to text ratio is 60:40 as the more images the
magazine has the more interested the target audience would be. This is because
stereotypically, the target audience have a low attention span so would easily
be put off a double page spread with a higher text to image ratio. The colours
used on the magazine will portray the tone fo the magazine and the articles,
for example dark colours such as blacks and greys would suggest negativity, where
as pinks, blues and yellows would suggest positivity, dependant on the article.
The images would link to the articles and would connote again whether it is
positive or negative The highest number of columns I am going to use is 6, as I
think this would be suitable to spread across a double page spread without it
looking too heavy.

Branding
Objectives
|
|
What is the genre of your magazine? What are you
informing your audience about?
How will it branded?
What are the connotations of your branding
decisions?
What are the connotations of the magazine’s name?
|
The genre of my magazine is women’s lifestyle.
This will be aimed at students ages 16-24. I am informing my target audience
of seasonal affective disorder as one of my double page spreads, this also
provides a secondary target audience, as seasonal affective disorder doesn’t
just affect 16-24 year olds. Other double page spreads inform them on how
they can change themselves, positively and the final double page spread
informs them on a personal story. I feel that these are all things that the
target audience will be interested in as they may be able to relate to the
articles in their own way. The fact that the double page spreads don’t
entwine with each other is affective, this is because if the target audience
aren’t interested in one of the articles they may be interested in the
others.
I will brand my magazine by using the same colours
on my front cover and throughout my double page spreads. I will use colours such as pink, blue,
yellow, black and red. I feel like this will be stereotypically colours’ that
would attract my target audience; as these colours are mainly feminine. My
magazines name is ‘Her’ which connotes a feminine only magazine- it suggests
is it for her only not him. I think it indicates who the stories inside
relate to and who could benefit from picking up the magazine.

Audience
communication objectives
|
|
Who is your audience?
Identify: tribe, socioeconomics, age, gender
split.
|
My audience is females only, aged between 16-24.
My primary target audience will be people interested in relating themselves
to other people’s stories and possibly people who are looking for a change.
My secondary target audience will be aimed at people who can also relate
themselves to stories that my magazine will withhold. The target audience
will be students, so stereotypically they will not have a large amount of
money to spend on magazines, this is why my magazine is priced around £1.50,
as I don’t think this is a excessive amount to pay for a magazine.
|
Your unique selling point
|
My unique selling point would be that each double
page spread would be made to have a positive out come; I think this would be
different to other magazines in the market as there are many articles that
are made to be emotive. I think this would interest my readers more, as they
know the articles inside my magazine aren’t going put a negative tone on
their day.

Overview
|
|
Description of front cover and contents
page
Content.
Imagery to be deployed: metaphorical, ideal,
window to the future self
|
The front cover of my magazine will need to use
bright colours, such as pink, blue and yellows. My imagery will immediately
portray who the target audience is, I will be using natural looking girls
instead of models as I think this is more suitable in order to attract the
target audience. This is because I think it gives the target audience a sense
of realism. I am going to use passive imagery as I am using this throughout
my magazine.
The
images are a vital piece of my magazine as these are most likely to attract
the target audience and will link to my articles inside. The font I will use
is ‘bright and beautiful’ it is bold and clear. This title will appeal to the target audience as it is a feminine font
and stereotypically this is what the target audience are attracted to. The
sell lines will include the double page spread titles and I will include
rewards to attract the target audience. I think this will be effective, as I
don’t have a contents page so this gives the target audience an idea of what
the magazine includes. The colours I will use will be pink, blue, yellow and
red as these are all feminine colours and will be used as branding throughout
my magazine. The image to text ratio will be about 60:40 as I think this
would be suitable for my target audience. Stereotypically they have a shorter
attention span and a large amount of text to image is likely going to put
them off it. The main image used will be a passive image that will be a
window to the future self as this would be affective to attract the target
audience.
|
Double Page 1
Title, content and article type
|
This article will be called: 5 steps to happiness.
This article will be about 5 steps that the readers can follow, in order to
make a positive change to themselves. This will be an inspirational article
as the target audience will be looking at window to the future self and will
aspire to be like the final image. The length of the paragraphs will be as
short as possible as I feel this would be most appropriate to go with each
image. I feel like 4-6 lines will suffice. There will be three columns on the
first page and two columns on the second. I think this is affective, as it
will help make the article look less text heavy, which will attract more of
the target audience. The font for the actual body of the article will have to
use a plain and easy to read font such as Arial.
Therefore I am using: I will try and insure that I
use image to text ratio of 55:45 as stereotypically heavy text articles put
readers off. I will try to mix between both passive and active imagery, as some
images were taken posed. These images are mainly passive as they are steps
which include diets etc. I will not be including an lighting to my images as
I want to use all natural images to make the target audience feel like the
steps are realistic and they can actually achieve what they want to. The
beginning of the article will be positive and will make the point of the
article stand out. This will inspire the target audience into making a
positive change. There will be images for each step of the article which will
portray the meaning of the text, this is so that the target audience
understand and are sure of the outcome. This will make the layout more
interesting as there are many images that may entice the target audience. My
header will at the top left hand side page spread as this is where the target
audience will first look when reading. The subheading will be directly
underneath the title which the target can read and this will entice them to
read the article, this will be used to break up the header and the article.
|
Double Page 2
Title, content and article type
|
My second article will be called ‘Winter blues’.
This is an article based on seasonal affective disorder, it will include a
story about how the disorder has effective a female and it will also contain
the treatments for the disorder. I will be providing advice on certain types
of treatments which I think would be useful for the target audience that may
be reading the article and it possibly being related to them or someone they
know. I want the double page spread to be presented positively as I don’t
want the target audience to think that it is a negative disorder and that
they are on their own. I want the article to have an emotive tone on it,
however I want the target audience to feel positive about what they have
discovered. I am going to increase my paragraph length to 100 words to each
paragraph and this will cover 3 columns. I am using 3 large images which
equals out the image to text ratio as I think this is appropriate for my
target audience- as they stereotypically have a short attention span this
will keep them enticed. The images will be both active and passive dependant
on which step, as some will be to do with food where as others will be based
on exercise. The colours used will be colours I have used on the front cover
to suit my target audience which would create a branding for my magazine. I
will be writing in first and second person to suit the kind of language that
my readers would use or understand. I again will be using bold and clear
writing so that it is easy for the target audience to understand.
|
Double page
3
Title, content and article type
|
The final double page spread will be called
‘Home-time horror’ which will be an article based around an accident that
happened on the return home from work. It will be a story based on a
girlfriends feelings when her boyfriend got took into hospital for 3 weeks
with multiple operations. The images will all be based on the accident and
the times around the accident in order to give the article an emotive tone
and this would make the target audience understand and relate to the girls
feelings. The images will be literal and passive, and there will be no props
in the images it will all be done realistically. The language will be first
and second person again as I think this is best to get into character with
what the target audience would expect. As I understand the topic may be more
emotive for others I am going to try my best and produce it in a very
positive way. The colours I will use again will relate to the story such as
reds and this will be used on the front cover to brand my magazine. I will
use 4-5 columns will up to 100 words in each. This will be balanced out with
the large images that will be used on the double page spread so that it
doesn’t look too text heavy.

Distribution
objectives
|
|
Regional or national? Circulation: how many and
why this number?
Outlets and rationale:
Pricing: premium, mid or free to view? Why?
Print quality: Discuss print finishing, magazine
size, paper quality. Number of pages.
Advertising to content ratio
|
I will be creating a national magazine that will
be sold in newsagents for £1.50. I think this way it will get the appropriate
target audience that will be reading it compared with if I was producing a
free to view magazine. It will be placed with all the other women’s magazines
and will stand out the specific genre type. I am producing the best quality
paper as if I didn’t spend much on paper type the target audience may be less
likely to read the magazine that doesn’t appear to be nice. To print 4000
copies of ‘her’ magazine it is going to cost £677.10 for 12 pages of glossy
coated paper. The pricing of the magazine is £1.50 which I think is suitable
for the student target audience. I researched and found that A4 is the most
popular size this is why i chose to use it.

Story control Objectives and
Language Control Objectives
|
For my magazine as a whole I would like to create
a positive relationship with my reader. This is my main focus when I am
writing my articles. If there is no relationship the reader will not feel
that they need to be loyal to the magazine. I want to have a higher image to
text ratio throughout my magazine as I think this will be very useful in
attracting the reader. This is because stereotypically the target audience
are more likely to be put of a heavy text set article. I think the images are
important in attracting my target audience.
I am going to try and create a positive tone on
all my articles, as I want my target audience to feel a positive relationship
with my magazine, I feel like this will entice the reader into becoming a
frequent reader. For example when they read ‘winter blues’ about depression I
want them to feel positive about it and that they are able to change it. I
will be using positive language however some may be quite emotive for the
readers who can relate to themselves or someone they know. I wont be using
colloquial language as it is a national magazine and I would like my reader
to be able to understand, this will also maintain the right target audience.
|
Image content objectives
|
As I have discussed individual photo shoot it is
obvious what style I would like to try achieve for my magazine. I will be
using both passive and active image dependant on the article type. I will be
using some natural images for my ‘5 steps of happiness’ double page spread as
I feel this would be very realistic and they target audience will feel like
the outcome is possible. I will be using images that will be a window to the
future self that the reader can aspire to be like. Furthermore I will be using
real image for ‘home-time horror’ as these images were taken at the time of
the incident. For ‘winter blues’ the images will be symbolic of the tone of
the article and will portray some aspects of the article. I wont be using any
tilts on my imagery, as I would like my readers to feel equal and not feel
any less important. The models used will be the same age as my target
audience (16-24) as I feel this is appropriate and this will make them
identifiable with my target audience.
|
Colour control objectives
|
The colours used for my magazine will be branded
throughout my magazine; they will all be bright and positive colours such as
pink, blue and yellow. The three colours, I am going to mainly use on my
front cover and double page spreads but I am also going to use the colour red
and black for effect. The red will be used for ‘home time horror’ as I feel
this is most appropriate and has an emotive use of colour to link in with my
article.
|
Typography objectives
|
The typography will usually be basic sans serif
fonts as these are easiest to read. I think this will brand my magazine, same
as the colours will and this will help the target audience become familiar
and identify my magazine. The text for the body of the article will be in
Arial as this is clear for the readers.
|
Layout objectives
|
On an average I will be using no more than 4
columns on a double page spread. I feel that if I did any more on an A4 piece
of paper it would look too much and may cause it to be hard to read. The
header will be in different places on each double page spread to create an
explosive layout. The header will be the first thing the target audience will
read and will be the start of my magazine. I will use a breakout box on some
of my double page spreads as I feel this is useful in engaging my readers and
provide some readers with key information that don’t want to read the full
double page spread.

Article plan- Home time horror
Article Planning Sheet- home time horror
Plan the language use of the primary code of your article in the box
below.
Article
target audience:
|
|
Planning Comments
|
|
article genre
(purpose,
type)
|
This
will be an expose article, which will shock the target audience about a
accident that happened to a 17-year-old boy. It will also include shock
statistics, which will make the target audience aware of the risks of riding
motorcycles.
|
|
Narrative voice
(1st, 2nd or 3rd person) |
This
will again be in 1st and 2nd person as this best suite
the target audience. This will allow the target audience to understand and
relate better to the articles.
|
|
Register
(informal/formal,
colloquial, dialect, taboo words?)
|
I
will use both formal and informal language. I will use informal for the
actual interview article, which expresses emotions etc. whilst using
colloquial language. Where as I will use formal language for when adding
shocking statistics.
|
|
Stylistics
(repetition,
strong verbs, adjectives, alliteration, similes, metaphors, sentencing,
rhythm)
|
I
will again use rhetorical questions on my article, this will entice them to
read the article and realise how serious it was. This may make the target
audience relate themselves to the article.
|
|
Tone of address
(hectoring,
sarcastic, ‘matey’, ironic, etc)
|
The
tone of the address will be serious but will have a positive twist on the
article. Obviously because the article is about an accident the target
audience will not be humoured by the contents but it will be produced in a quite
positive way as though, even though it was serious, it wasn’t the end of the
world and there is always chance to see the positive side of things.
|
|
Structure and pace
(discourse
structure, logical paragraphing, connectives, conclusion)
|
The
pace of this article will be quick paced, this is so the target audience can
get straight into grips with the story and be enticed straight away. The
quicker the readers get to the point of the story the less likely they are
going to stop reading half way through. The article will consist of 4-6 small
paragraphs, which will make the article look like there is less text. This is
effective as the readers and less likely going to be put off because the dps
wouldn’t look as text heavy. Because stereotypically the target audience have
a short attention span.
